People always say to not judge a book by its cover... but I think it's safe to say that most of us do. That’s why I decided to start redesigning covers for a few of my favorite books.
I wanted to create cover art that reflected the wonderful stories, themes and characters, compelling the viewer pick the book up and get lost in its pages.
I created the illustration for this book coved in Procreate. I wanted to focus on portraying the character Naoko as she is a central figure in the main characters life. In my illustration I wanted to encapsulate the emotions of grief, loss and depression that Naoko goes through throughout the book.
For the cover of "Giovanni's Room", I wanted to capture the feeling of loneliness that this book possesses. Even when the main character is together with his lover, he has a sense of loneliness that comes from his internal struggles with his own identity.
I found this image of Paris on Pexels, recolored with Photoshop and then illustrated my characters sitting on a building facing two different directions. I wanted to show that even though the two are physically close, there seems to be a distance between them.
"The Wind-up Bird Chronicle" has so much complexity and explores a great many topics. For the cover image, I created a collage of both found images and my own illustrations. The book itself feels like a collage of characters and events, and it is often confusing, and it can lose its sense of reality. I wanted to give this book a lighter feeling because, although there are a lot of dark and bazar events that occur in this book, there is still a sense of calm and acceptance.
